Spiritual Meditation
Meditation is a mental practice that has been used for centuries by members and founders of every major religious and philosophical system to transcend the confines of the reflexive, 'conscious' mind. Meditation allows people to delve deeper inwards and achieve a higher level of self-awareness, as well as a connection with the world around them. From Taoism to Christianity, spiritual leaders from all over the world have used meditation techniques that have been adopted and adapted as they've spread from nation to nation.
Some have defined the process of meditation as a self regulation of attention for the purpose of achieving spiritual insight. As a person goes into deeper states of meditation, he or she gets closer to a state of self-realization and enlightenment: satori.
There are many ways of achieving this level of focused consciousness. The various methods can be separated according to the type and level of focus involved in the exercise. Some methods encourage the practitioners to focus on the background field, their perceptions and experience of the field of existence around them.
One such form of 'mindfulness meditation' is Japa meditation, which uses the repetition of sounds or mantras to reach the meditative state. In Japa meditation one must maintain an open focus, while centering one's attention on the process of chanting.
Other meditation techniques involve concentrating on a specific object or process and shutting off the rest of one's sensory field.
Trataka is a kind of concentrative meditation that involves gazing steadily at a focus object or thing, in order to transport a person beyond his or her immediate sensory realm.
And there are still other techniques that involve shifting between field and focus object. Learning about, let alone mastering, the many philosophies and methods of meditation is a daunting task for anyone. But in this age of information, help is at your fingertips.
